We believe that additional conversation sessions such as these are essential to any formal Irish language course, whether at a university or another institution, inside or outside of Ireland. Students receive a personalized, hidden link to their university's page, and conversation sessions are scheduled to tailor to their course's schedule and their professor's needs.
Here are some thoughts from a university professor who used Comhrá le Chéile in a Fall 2013 course at Hampshire College, in Amherst Massachusetts:
My experience with Comhrá le Chéile took place in the context of teaching a linguistics course about Endangered Languages, in which Irish was used as a main case study. I wanted my students to have some (optional) hands-on engagement with hearing and using the language, and Amanda and Jonathan filled the bill admirably. They provided well-structured and well-planned weekly online introductory language-learning sessions for about a dozen students who chose to participate, as well as some informal background lecture and discussion about Irish culture. The students were, overall, very enthusiastic about their experience. They especially appreciated the personal and interactive character of the program; one told me, for instance, “I had a very nice sense that I was engaging with a real speaker of the language” rather than a textbook or a teacher. All in all it was a successful and interesting experiment, and given the growing appeal of on-line teaching and learning I see a bright future for Comhrá le Chéile.
-Mark Feinstein, Linguistics Professor at Hampshire College
